Rhinoplasty is surgery to improve the contour and appearance of the nose.

Form and function of the nose are tightly linked such that attempted improvements in form can affect function (and vice versa) in a positive or negative way.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty often involves reducing the size of the nose, narrowing the nose and altering the position of the nasal tip (relative to the upper lip).

Functional rhinoplasty may involve a variety of maneuvers designed to improve the airway while preserving or improving shape.

Revision rhinoplasty is often very challenging because it involves three-dimensional contouring in the face of scar tissue present from a prior surgery or multiple surgeries. Revision rhinoplasty may require removing tissue where too much remains, adding tissue grafts or implants where too little volume exists, correcting asymmetry, altering tip position, narrowing the base, etc.

Patients typically wear a splint on the outside of the nose for one week after surgery. The initial healing period is one week, typical of other facial plastic surgery procedures.

While patients can get back to work or school after the first week, care must be taken to avoid any accidental trauma to the nose during the initial 6 weeks after surgery (to allow time for solid healing of delicate bony structures). The area above the nasal tip takes the longest to heal with a gradual decrease in swelling occurring over 3 to 6 months after surgery.
